The Natural Choice for Kitchen Cabinets: Accoya Timber

When it comes to designing your dream kitchen, the choice of materials for your cabinets is a crucial decision. While there are numerous options available, Accoya timber is a superior choice for kitchens that are built to last – which is why we build our cabinets using it at Thomas James.

Here we’ll delve into what it is and the many benefits of using Accoya in kitchens. From its sustainability and durability to its timeless appeal, Accoya timber is the natural choice for a kitchen that's both beautiful and long-lasting.

What is Accoya Timber?

Accoya is made from Radiata Pine trees. When the Pine Trees reach maturity at around 30 years, they are harvested before undergoing a treatment process. This process is known as Acetylation, and is a non-toxic method that enhances it’s natural properties to protect the wood and turn it into one of the most stable wood’s in the world. The stability of the wood means it is ideal for many applications – including both indoor and outdoor kitchens. Accoya wood is Class 1 durable and surpasses even the most durable old growth tropical hardwoods.

Why do we use Accoya vs other hardwoods?

1. Durability & Stability

One of the most significant advantages of Accoya is its durability. Kitchen cabinets are subjected to daily wear and tear, making this a top priority. In a kitchen environment with fluctuating humidity and temperature levels, this is a significant advantage. You won't have to worry about your cabinets warping, swelling, or shrinking over time. This ensures that your kitchen cabinets will remain functional and maintain their appearance. It’s also highly resistant to rot, decay, and insects, thanks to the non-toxic acetylation process. This process significantly increases the wood's lifespan, ensuring your cabinets remain strong and attractive for many years, and makes it a great choice for outdoor kitchens.

2. Sustainability

Another advantage of Accoya timber for your kitchen cabinets is its sustainability. Accoya wood is sourced from sustainable forests and managed through responsible forestry practices. This means you can have a beautiful kitchen without contributing to deforestation or environmental harm. It's a choice that reflects a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.

3. Low Maintenance

Unlike some other materials that require regular maintenance, Accoya timber cabinets are relatively low-maintenance. Their stability and natural resistance to decay means you won't need to invest in frequent treatments or repairs. This can saves you time and money in the future, and also ensures that your kitchen retains its beauty with minimal effort.

4. Customisability

Accoya timber can be customised to suit your specific design preferences and needs. Whether you want sleek, contemporary cabinets or more traditional styles, Accoya wood can be shaped, stained, or painted to match your vision perfectly. Plus, it's easy to work with, allowing for intricate designs and details. Its versatility in terms of design allows you to create a kitchen that is truly unique, something we aim to do for each of our clients.

If you're in the process of planning your kitchen renovation, you should be mindful of what materials your cabinets are being made from. Accoya should be the top choice for kitchens that are built to last, which is why we use it here at Thomas James.
